Tekken 8 has been officially unveiled with a new action-packed trailer.
Today’s State of Play showcase gave us the trailer for Tekken 8, an upcoming sequel to the iconic fighting game franchise. The trailer focuses on the game’s big leap in visuals over previous entries, giving two familiar faces a photorealistic upgrade.
Watch the trailer below:
Game director and franchise creator Katsuhiro Harada wrote on a PlayStation Blog post that the trailer is an in-engine capture of footage on the PlayStation 5, meaning this trailer is intended to show players exactly what they can visually expect from Tekken 8. This includes battle scene effects, Harada says: “If you pay attention to the background during battle, you can see waves and dynamic tornadoes, a huge oil tanker gradually falling apart, a storm made so realistic you can feel the pressure of the wind, the density of the rain.”
Just as the trailer suggests, the story of Tekken 8 will focus on a father-son showdown between Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama. The trailer consists of a cinematic of the game’s campaign, though it lacks context on exactly why these characters go about it so brutally. Harada writes:
This new entry will focus on the father and son showdown between Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama. As for the significance of the scene in the trailer and its importance to the main story… we can’t wait for you to find out when the game releases.
And then he tweeted that he doesn’t have a PS5 yet:
Fans of the franchise were also treated to a Netflix animated series based on Tekken 2 recently, titled Tekken: Bloodline. The series follows Jin Kazama’s origin story, making it good viewing material if you want to catch up before Tekken 8 arrives. The sequel has no release date as of yet.
