The biography of filmmaker Raj Khosla will be released in 2022

The first authorized biography of director Raj Khosla, known for directing classics like ”CID”, ”Dostana”, ”Do Raaste” and the blockbuster of yesteryear star Sadhana ”Mere Saaya” , will be in the stands this year, the publishing house Hachette announced on Monday.

The yet-to-be-titled biography, written by author Amborish Roychoudhury in association with the late director’s daughters Uma Kapur and Anita Khosla, will delve into the filmmaker’s life as well as the scope and breadth of his artwork.

”Given his stellar filmography, it’s surprising that Khosla hasn’t been as talked about as his contemporaries. The book aims to correct that.

“The book will not only contain invaluable anecdotes, but also insights into his directing style that inspired several directors who followed him,” Roychoudhury told PTI.

Over a career spanning three decades and 27 films, Khosla has directed thrillers ”Bombai ka Babu”, ”Woh Kaun Thi”, ”Mera Saaya” and ”Anita” as well as neo-black ”Kala Pani”. He dwelt on love stories in ”Ek Musafir Ek Hasina” and ”Prem Kahani”.

Khosla also achieved box office hits ”Mera Gaon Mera Desh”, ”Meraa Dost Meraa Dushman”, ”Nehle Pe Dehla” and family drama ”Sunny”.

The filmmaker, who was trained by legendary actor-director Guru Dutt, has also been recognized for shooting musical sequences with dexterity. Some of Khosla’s most iconic songs include ”Lag Jaa gale”, ”Mera saaya saath hoga”, ”Jaane kya baat hai”, ”Hai apna dil toh awara” and ”Ye hai Bombay Meri Jaan”.

Roychoudhury said the book is based on his primary research and his conversation with actors who worked closely with the director.

“I was able to speak to many of his collaborators including the late Lata Mangeshkar, Mahesh Bhatt, Dharmendra, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rahman, Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Kumar, Mumtaz, Prem Chopra and many more. to Aamir Khan, who grew up in the same building and later bought Khosla’s apartment,” the author said.

Roychoudhury’s latest book ”Cult of their Own: Bollywood Beyond Box Office” won a Special Mention at the 66th National Film Awards, 2018.
