Theater and Bowling at the South Side Mall

EVO Entertainment Group plans to open a movie theater, bowling alley and arcade complex in a former Sears store in South Park Mall – its first location in San Antonio.

The Austin-based company said it will include 12 screens, a cinema service with luxury recliners, a scratch kitchen and bar, an arcade, 14 bowling alleys, virtual reality experiences and bumper cars.

It will fill about half of the Sears store, which closed in 2020. The complex is expected to open in December. A filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation puts the renovation costs at around $5.5 million.

“This was the perfect opportunity to join a community we’ve been monitoring for a while now,” EVO CEO Mitchell Roberts said in a statement. “South San Antonio is one of the hottest, most active and vibrant neighborhoods in the city, and we’re excited to bring quality family entertainment to the neighborhood.”

EVO plans to hire approximately 175 employees for the location.

The company operates entertainment complexes in Schertz, Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, Austin, Kyle and San Marcos. He plans to open three more in Southlake, Dallas and Hampton, Virginia.

SP Hwy 35 Investments LLC, a group of Houston-area investors, purchased about 18.3 acres from owners of South Park Mall last winter. This included the former Sears store and a Sears Automotive Center.

A representative of the mall’s owners – Namdar Realty Group, Mason Asset Management and CH Capital Group – said in December that the group planned to split the space between an entertainment center and a gym. SP Hwy 35 has a lease with gym chain Fitness Connection, county records show.

The group also wants to set up an Ojos Locos Sports Cantina location in the former auto center, the mall’s representative said.
