Waited to collaborate with Anubhav Sinha, says Rajkummar Rao

During his 12-year journey in Bollywood, actor Rajkummar Rao may have worked with some of the best filmmakers, but he says working with director Anubhav Sinha on the upcoming ‘Bheed’ film was special. Among his future film line-ups, the 37-year-old actor said he was waiting to collaborate with Sinha, best known for “Mulk”, “Article 15”, and “Thappad”. The two teamed up for the first time for “Bheed,” billed as a hard-hitting social drama.

“I was waiting for the collaboration to happen. He’s one of the best filmmakers we have. After working, we became good friends. It’s very special for us,” said Rao, who finished the shooting of the film in December, at PTI.

The National Award winner is also looking forward to his other film “HIT,” which stands for Homicide Intervention Team, in which he will be seen playing a cop.

The film, which is a remake of the 2020 Telugu hit of the same name, tells the story of a cop (Rao) who is on the trail of a missing woman. Sailesh Kolanu, who directed the original film, is also directing the Hindi version.

Rao said he had seen the original film when the team contacted him, adding that the Hindi adaptation of “HIT” had received a new treatment. It also stars Sanya Malhotra.

“I re-read the script to see how they were adapting it in the Hindi language. Shailesh, who directed the original, didn’t want to recreate what he had done earlier. He made sure it had the different tune. For him, the whole point is to start from scratch and treat it like a new original movie,” he said.

“The story is so exciting, every five minutes something happens. The twists are brilliantly written and it came together really well,” he added.

Rao has completed filming for the Netflix Original film “Monica, O My Darling”, directed by Vasan Bala and produced by Sriram Raghavan.

“It’s a great thriller like Sriram movies sir. It should be released this year,” he said.

For his next film “Mr. and Mrs. Mahi”, which takes place against the backdrop of cricket, the actor is learning to master this popular sport.

In the film, directed by Sharan Sharma of “Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl”, Rao and Jahnvi Kapoor will star as cricketers, Mahendra and Mahima. The actor, who is reuniting with his ‘Roohi’ co-star Kapoor for ‘Mr and Mrs Mahi’, said the film has a lot more to offer than cricket.

“I love playing cricket and when you get to do a movie like this…it’s fun. But the movie isn’t just about cricket, it’s a bit more than that. Cricket is definitely one of them. important part, but it’s not just about cricket. .

“It’s beautiful how Sharan wrote the script. I’m in touch with Sharan and we’re discussing the character and doing some reading. It’s a very special movie,” Rao said.

Backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, “Mr and Mrs Mahi” is set to hit theaters on October 7.

Asked about starring in international projects after Ramin Bahrani’s ‘The White Tiger’, Rao said he was open to being part of English-language films and series.

Adapted from Aravind Adiga’s 2008 novel of the same name, the film also starred Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Adarsh Gourav.

“There were a few things we were discussing but nothing materialized. I’m very open to exploring English movies and series,” he added.

Rao’s latest film is “Badhaai Do”, also starring Bhumi Pednekar.
